July 5, 2019 · Wrapped sculptures at the corner of 52nd Street and the Avenue of the Americas (6th Ave) in NYC.The two sculptures by artist Jim Dine are bronze renderings of "Venus de Milo" statues and with a 3rd sculpture on 53rd street are collectively titled "Looking Toward the Avenue".I happened to be in NYC in the fall of 1989 when the sculptures were being delivered and were still wrapped. Only recently did I happen to walk by and realize the wrapped sculptures weren't the final art. So, now I feel better about "owning it".

January 21, 2020Icebergs collected together in the "Iceberg Graveyard" in Pleneau Bay in the Antarctic Peninsula. The bay is near the Lemaire Channel and Petermann Island and traps iceberg that come into the bay but can't get out. They end their lives there...but unlike other areas where the icebergs are free roaming and floating which makes them dangerous to approach, the icebergs in the Graveyard are often grounded on land–which makes them safer to approach, so close you can touch them!

February 16, 2020Yes, you are seeing this right...taken as our group of intrepid photographers were crossing the Drake Passage on our way to Antarctica. They say it can be a "Drake Lake" meaning not very rough or "Drake Rock & Roll". We got the rock & roll and we loved it! I was out on deck with my room mate Seth Resnick. We kinda got yelled at for being on deck when it was so rough. But the expedition leader said don't go on deck when the main outer hatches on the doors were dogged. Well, we were on the port side (leeward) and our hatch was open, so we went out on deck. Kinda scary/thrilling but we got some interesting shots.
February 24, 2020View of the old city center of Firenze, Italia from the Piazzale Michelangelo as the sun was setting. This was shot on a trip celebrating my 40th wedding anniversary. The only camera I took was my little trusty Sony RX100 II camera (aside from my iPhone of course). This is a portion of an 8 shot pano that resulted in an image of 14,568 pixels by 5988 pixels or 40.5" x 16.6 @ 360 ppi.The reason I only took the little Sony is I wanted to stay married for the foreseeable future–no fancy cameras with interchangeable lenses and tripods on anniversary trips is the rule!

March 26, 2020Title: Brown BundleShot with an early production version Canon 1Ds with a 24MM tilt/shift lens. This image was one of several still life images shot on both film and digital for the purposes of comparison. The digital version won in terms of dynamic range and apparent sharpness (even though I did a very high rez scan on my Imacon scanner). Sadly, I can't seem to find the scans and since I just moved, my film files are pretty disorganized. So at the moment you'll just have to trust me that the digital won :~)

June 25, 2020Wild mustangs check me out while visiting the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary just outside of Hot Springs, South Dakota. The sanctuary was started by Dayton O. Hyde in 1988 to have a place for wild horses that might otherwise be culled on Federal land out West. The sanctuary has about 12,000 acres and 2000 acres leased from the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The land straddles a stretch of the Cheyenne River. The goal of saving the American Wild Mustang also includes the preservation of endangered wild horse bloodlines of the resident mustang bands. This includes the Spanish, Choctaw Indian, Curly and American Mustangs. The sanctuary is home to over 500 horses. Sadly, it seems that sanctuary is now closed to the public due to the Covid-19 pandemic. When I visited a couple of years ago with my daughter (who loves horses) we got to take the "pro photo tour" and drive around that back pasture to see the mustangs up close. Hopefully when things settle down, they will reopen for tours.
June 30, 2020Kodak Brownie Hawkeye model with Flash!Darn, I missed "Camera Day" by an hour...oh well, here's the earliest camera I had. Sadly, I have no idea where it may be after I moved :~(I remember my father handing me a camera on a vacation and told me to shoot pictures...when I shot up all the film in one day, he took the camera away...seems he didn't realize I might actually take a lot of pictures! Years later he gave me another camera as a gift for college. That was the camera that launched by career although I always remember the shots I did with the Brownie. No idea where the photos might be.

August 16, 2020A remarkable iceberg found in the “Iceberg Graveyard” just off Pléneau Island near the Lemaire Channel, Antarctica. The columns are a result of natural seawater erosion. The interesting aspect of the Iceberg Graveyard is that these bergs are grounded–which means they can't float away nor capsize which is a major danger and one reason why Zodiac cruises don't approach large icebergs. You never know when a berg will roll over.If you are in a Zodiac near a berg when it rolls over, you run the very real risk of having your Zodiac flooded or capsized. With the water temp near freezing, you might not survive in the water for the period of time it might take to rescue you.Which is why the expedition crew used to joke about our life preservers–which auto inflate when they hit seawater-aren't so much "life preservers" and more like "body recovery devises". But since these bergs are grounded, we were able to get really close. In fact my bunkmate Seth Resnick talked the Zodiac driver to go into the arch so he could get a shot. That particular cruise was launched with the instructors on the cruise while we shot a video commemorating the launch and shipping of Lightroom 1.0 on February 19th, 2007. In our boat was Michael Reichmann, John Paul Caponigro, Seth Resnick, Ian Lyons, Bill Atkinson, Stephen Johnson and our videographer Chris Sanderson. Our Zodiac driver was Robert "has anybody seen a big white boat" Gilmore.
